The Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences at Michigan State University is inviting applications for a Health Programs (HP) faculty position in veterinary companion animal Primary Care.   The position is a 1 year appointment with the academic rank of Assistant Professor.    This is a full time appointment that has the potential for renewal.    Minimum qualifications include a D.V.M. degree (or equivalent) from an AVMA accredited veterinary school and a valid license to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Michigan.   At least three years of post-graduate (DVM) companion animal clinical experience or completion of a rotating or applicable specialty internship is required.    The successful applicant will join two other full-time faculty members, 2 licensed veterinary technicians, and a veterinary assistant devoted to the primary care service.    Department faculty also include specialists in surgery, internal medicine, emergency and critical care medicine, cardiology, neurology, dermatology, ophthalmology, oncology, sports medicine and rehabilitation, and anesthesia. 

The duties of the successful applicant include participation in the teaching and service missions of the MSU College of Veterinary Medicine.  Approximately 70-80% effort will be devoted to clinical service and instruction.  Applicants should have experience and aptitude in delivering excellent primary (first-opinion) medical, surgical, and dental care to companion (canine and feline) animals.   Small non-traditional “pocket pet” clinical experience is desirable but not essential.   An interest in shelter medicine and formalized teaching and/or leadership experience is also desirable.  The position involves extensive instruction of veterinary students in a teaching-hospital setting, surgical supervision of veterinary students in an outreach shelter environment, and training of veterinary interns assigned to the Primary Care Service.    The instructional model utilizes direct and experiential learning for preclinical and clinical veterinary students.  The goals are to emphasize critical thinking,  increase student autonomy, and provide hands-on experience under direct veterinary and technician supervision, aiming for a model of excellence in companion animal first opinion and preventative care.
