Clinical or tenure-track faculty position in Veterinary Ophthalmology: 

 

The Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine has an immediate opening for a clinical or tenure track faculty position in Veterinary Ophthalmology (rank of Assistant Professor or Assistant Clinical Professor) to join the current ophthalmologist, Dr. Caroline Betbeze.  Qualified candidates must have Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree (or equivalent).  Diplomate status in the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists is preferred, but residency-trained individuals eligible for final certification examination will also be considered.  Clinical competence in veterinary ophthalmology and demonstrated aptitude in teaching are required.  An advanced degree and experience in clinical research are desirable.  Salary and rank is commensurate with qualifications and experience. 

 

Teaching responsibilities involve didactic teaching and clinical training of professional students, technology students, interns, residents, and graduate students in an innovative academic program.  Service responsibilities involve operation of the Ophthalmology Service in the Animal Health Center, secondary emergency duty, and consultation with private practitioners.  Clinical duties are shared with other faculty members.  Participation in the college’s continuing education and clinical research program, and supervision of ophthalmology interns and residents is expected.  For the tenure-track position, development of a specific area of clinical and research focus and expertise, supervision of postgraduate degree students, external grant acquisition, and manuscript publication are expected and supported.

 

The Ophthalmology department is supported by a Zeiss Lumera-T operating microscope with teaching head and recording capabilities.  We have a Sovereign compact phacoemulsification machine with a peristaltic pump and an Iridex diode laser with transcleral, glaucoma, and indirect headset attachments.  We have several surgical packs for intraocular and extraocular surgeries and our own surgical suite.  Cryosurgery with liquid nitrogen is available, as well as a strontium90 probe.  In the exam room, we have several goniolenses, volk condensing lenses, and Kowa SL-15 slit lamp biomicroscopes.  Several Tonopen XL applanation tonometers, rebound tonometers, direct ophthalmoscopes, and transilluminators are also in the clinic.  Two indirect ophthalmoscopes with teaching capabilities are available.  The department has retinographics electroretinography and has access to radiologists for ultrasonography as well as our own ophthalmic ultrasound (12.5 megahertz probe).  All of the ophthalmic equipment is less than five years old.  We have a Nikon camera with macro lens for external photography and a Clearview optical imaging system for fundic photography. We have access to clinical and anatomical pathologists and have our own capabilities to perform in house cytology.   Two CT scanners (a 4-slice Toshiba Aquilion scanner and a 64-slice GE Lightspeed scanner), as well as a 3 Tesla GE Signa Excite MR unit, are available for advanced imaging.
