The Department of Clinical Sciences at the NCSU College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking a tenure track faculty member in the field of Avian - Exotic Animal Medicine at the rank of Assistant Professor.

 

Qualifications:

DVM or equivalent degree. Residency training, (or equivalent experience), with a focus on avian, reptile, and exotic mammal species and eligibility for the ACZM, ECZM or ABVP (Avian, Exotic Companion Mammal, Reptile and Amphibian) exam is required. Clinical medicine and surgery experience with birds, reptiles and exotic mammals is required. Candidates must meet requirements for faculty or regular veterinary licensure in North Carolina.

 

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:

Experience in conducting research benefitting avian species. Demonstrated excellence in teaching DVM students and clinical experience with a variety of avian, reptile, exotic mammals, fish and invertebrates.

 

Responsibilities:

The selected candidate will: 1) Provide high quality effective and efficient patient care for a variety of exotic animal species including birds, reptiles, exotic mammals, fish and invertebrates. Clinical responsibilities will entail all the duties associated with case management (client and referral veterinarian communication, development of a diagnostic and treatment plan, interpretation of diagnostic findings, implementation of a treatment plan, surgery, post-operative care, development of a home care plan, and fiscally responsible case management).  The individual will participate in the emergency roster and facilitate collaboration and cooperation between the EAMS and other components of the MSM. 2) Provide efficient hospital management for the EAMS including case & personnel scheduling, interaction with other hospital services, caseload promotion, development of service-specific SOPs, and cross training veterinarians and technicians in Emergency Services and ICU/Intermediate Care areas. 3) Provide high quality clinical teaching for veterinary students and house officers, including house officers in other specialty services. 4) Assist in oversight, training and mentoring of the clinical technician in the EAMS.  5) The selected individual will be expected to establish an active and collaborative research program capable of attracting external grant funding.  Research will develop new knowledge benefitting avian species.
