 The Department of Clinical Studies, School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Pennsylvania is seeking applications for 2 faculty positions (Assistant or Associate Clinical Professor) in Orthopedic and Soft Tissue/General/Oncologic Surgery, in the Academic Clinician (AC) Track.  Applications will be accepted immediately. Though negotiable, the anticipated start date of the position is July 1, 2016.  The primary responsibilities of an AC are clinical service in the Small Animal Hospital and teaching of veterinary students, interns, and residents.  There is no requirement for scholarly activity, though collaborative clinical research is encouraged.

The small animal surgery program at Penn Vet currently consists of 8 ACVS Diplomates), 1 ACVECC (interventional radiology/endoscopy), 7 residents-in-training, 3 full-time CVT, and 1 part-time CVT.  The three sections that make up the surgery department include soft tissue surgery, orthopedic surgery, and surgical oncology. 

The Matthew J. Ryan Small Animal Hospital is situated on Penn’s vibrant main campus in Philadelphia, a beautiful historic city that offers an abundance of cultural resources, including music, art, theater, and fine dining (www.upenn.edu/life-at-penn/philadelphia).  Adjacent to the veterinary hospital are 2 world-class biomedical hospitals, the Perelman School of Medicine and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, both of which provide excellent opportunities with collaborators that have common interests (www.upenn.edu/life-at-penn). 

The hospital is a dynamic environment with boarded faculty in most major specialty areas that are recognized by the AVMA, including 3 ACVSMR Diplomates.  It has recently opened a state-of-the-art minimally invasive operating suite designed to perform advanced minimally invasive surgical procedures (laparoscopy, thoracoscopy, arthroscopy, and minimally invasive fracture repair). The surgical facilities are complemented by our state-of-the- art equipment (operating microscope, MRI, CT, ultrasound, and stationary fluoroscopy), rehabilitation medicine service, intensive care unit, hemodialysis unit, interventional radiology service, and veterinary clinical investigations center (http://pennvcic.org). The Orthopedic Service works closely with rehabilitation medicine for non-surgical and post-operative management of orthopedic cases.   

Candidates must have a DVM or equivalent degree and be an individual who has completed surgery residency training. Salary will be commensurate with professional and academic credentials and experience.  Time will be allotted for ACVS Board preparation for non-boarded applicants.
