The Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences of the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a faculty position in Small Animal Surgery.  This is a full-time clinical or tenure track position with academic rank based on the qualifications of the applicant.  The successful candidate will join a team of four other small animal surgeons.  Start-up funds will be made available to help develop surgical skills, research or scholarly activity.

 

Responsibilities:              

•The primary job responsibility will be to alternately lead one of two surgical services (orthopedic, soft tissue). This will include primary patient care and supervision of clinical care delivered by students, interns, and residents assigned to the surgical service.   Job may include occasion travel to VMCVM Satellite Clinic in Roanoke.

•Additional service responsibilities include consultations within the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and outside referring veterinarians, participate in continuing education programs of the College and participate in faculty governance activities.

•Applicant must be committed to excellent patient management, client service, and clinical teaching.

•Teaching responsibilities will include didactic, laboratory and small group clinical instruction in surgery and related disciplines.  Clinical instruction in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital will be directed toward professional students, interns, residents and graduate students from various disciplines.

•Participation in general small animal surgery service activities, such as meetings, resident seminars, journal club and rounds is expected.

•Research responsibilities will vary based on the interest and qualification of the candidate and may include collaborative or translational research.  This position will be encouraged to work with ongoing research programs within the College.  Independent and/or collaborative creative scholarship is expected in order to contribute to the scholarly mission of the department.

 

Required Qualifications:               

•DVM or equivalent degree.  

•Board certification or completion an approved residency program and meeting all of the required credentials needed to take the certification exams of either the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) and/or the European College of Veterinary Surgeons (ECVS).

•Occasional travel to Roanoke (45 miles). 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

•Advanced clinical skills and experience.

•Teaching experience.

•Record scholarly achievement.

 

Rank and Salary:

•Rank and salary will commensurate with qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.

 

Starting Date:

•Though negotiable, the anticipated start date of the position is July 1, 2016.
