Chief Veterinary Medical Officer and Associate Dean of Veterinary Medical Center Operations – William R. Pritchard Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH). Initial and subsequent appointments as Chief Veterinary Medical Officer (CVMO) are for 5 year
terms with academic and administrative review initiated in the 4th year of each term. The CVMO will hold an Academic Administrator title and the successful candidate is expected to qualify for and hold an appropriate professorial title in an academic department
within the School of Veterinary Medicine. Salary and rank dependent on qualifications and experience.
The VMTH (http://www.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/vmth/index.cfm), located on the University of California-Davis campus, is an accredited veterinary hospital with a community practice and 34 specialty clinical
services and, 102 clinical faculty, 459 staff (including 15 staff veterinarians, 93 residents, 4 interns), an annual caseload exceeding 50,000 patients, and a budget of $50 million.
The CVMO as the academic administrator for the clinical enterprise is responsible for the professional, academic, and ethical affairs, financial health, and operational efficiency of the VMTH. Reporting directly
to the Dean of the School of Veterinary Medicine, the CVMO is a member of the senior leadership team of the School and ensures that the VMTH meets its mission providing state of the art clinical care and serving as the primary clinical teaching experience
for DVM students and postgraduate veterinarians in advanced clinical training programs.
Candidates must have [1] a DVM degree or equivalent; [2] a national reputation for excellence in clinical veterinary practice, preferably with advanced clinical training and specialty board certification; [3]
demonstrated leadership skills in managing complex organizations and the ability to engage a diversity of individuals, groups, and organizations, within and outside the School in pursuit of excellence in clinical education, clinical service, and patient care;
[4] demonstrated skills, knowledge and abilities in the business administration and organizational management of a veterinary teaching hospital; [5] demonstrated understanding of, and expertise in, veterinary medical education and clinical experiential training
of professional (DVM) students and veterinarians seeking advanced clinical training; [6] demonstrated experience in, or understanding of, the importance of clinical research and be an advocate for translational research in a teaching hospital environment;
[7] a demonstrated record of effective collegial communication and interpersonal skills to engage a diverse constituency in support and promotion of the clinical enterprise, and a record of support for diversity and inclusion within an organization; and [8]
an acuity and ability for outreach and a willingness to cultivate philanthropic support of the clinical enterprise.
