The College of Veterinary Medicine at Kansas State University invites nominations and applications for the position of Director of the Veterinary Health Center (VHC).  The VHC Director reports to the Dean and is a member of the College Administrative Council.  The successful candidate’s credentials preferably qualify the candidate for an academic position in the College of Veterinary Medicine. The VHC Director is the full charge medical, financial and administrative leader responsible to ensure that the hospital provides high quality clinical care to veterinary patients, quality service to referring veterinarians and clients, and enriching clinical learning opportunities for veterinary students, residents and interns, in a successful academic veterinary business environment.  The Director will work closely with the Veterinary Clinical Sciences Department Head and Director of the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory to ensure that all missions of the College are supported, and will promote a positive, supportive and inclusive working environment that fosters teamwork, cooperation, and innovation.

 

Responsibilities 

 

·         Serve as Chief Medical Officer.

·         Provide vision and leadership for the Hospital Board with overall responsibility for the quality, effectiveness, efficiency, financial stewardship, and growth of the VHC.

·         Maintain a state of the art hospital infrastructure that has a primary role in supporting clinical education of veterinary students and house officers, serves clients, patients and referring veterinarians; and serves as an academic resource to faculty.

·         Provide direction and leadership in human resource management.

·         Serve as a role model, leader and advocate for faculty, staff and students. 

·         Contribute annual performance reviews for faculty with clinical responsibilities.

·         Serve as the public information officers for the VHC.  Lead and facilitate public relations, marketing, communication and development of VHC initiatives to internal and external constituents to be competitive on a local, regional and national basis.

·         Effectively manage and resolve conflict.

·         Coordinate and teach the core Business Management course.

·         Promote and nurture a culture of collegiality, diversity, and inclusion within the VHC.

·         Oversight assure high quality intern and residency programs.

·         Develop and expand strong relationships with referring veterinarians.     

·         Assist faculty in resolving client and referring veterinarian issues.

·         Foster positive relationships with the state veterinary board and state and local veterinary medical associations.

 

Required qualifications

·         Core Competencies:

Experience in business management and leadership

Established record of decision-making and problem-solving

Communication and relationship management

 
Preferred qualifications

 

·         Specialty board certification

·         MBA degree

·         Administrative experience in an academic veterinary teaching hospital or large private veterinary referral center

Veterinary Teaching Hospital

 

The Veterinary Health Center at Kansas State University (www.vet.k-state.edu/vhc ) is a full service veterinary teaching hospital providing routine, specialty and emergency care in Manhattan, Kansas.   We provide care for an annual caseload of approximately 25,000 patients seen on-site, through our ambulatory care services, in our zoo animal medicine program and at area animal shelters.  On-site services are provided in our well-equipped 180,000 square foot facility on the campus of Kansas State University.   The VHC is staffed with approximately 45 faculty clinicians, 25 house officers, 30 veterinary technicians, and 40 support and administrative staff.
