Faculty Position in Small Animal Orthopedic Surgery

The Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine, The University of Tennessee is expanding its faculty and invites applications for a full-time tenure-track or clinical track faculty member in small animal orthopedic surgery. Our goal is to expand our current staff to 5 full time surgeons and two full time sports medicine specialists. The position is at the Assistant Professor or Associate Professor level, depending on qualifications and experience. The position will be available on or after July 1, 2015. Requirements for applicants include the DVM/VMD or equivalent degree and completion of an ACVS or ECVS approved residency in small animal surgery.  Board certification or completion of requirements for credentials application to the American or European College of Veterinary Surgeons is required. The successful candidate will be expected to add to the Department’s reputation by participation in clinical, didactic and laboratory teaching of small animal surgery to veterinary students, interns, and residents; participation in continuing education at the local and national levels; and development of a basic science or clinical research program or other forms of scholarly activity. Start-up funds will be made available to help develop surgical skills and research or scholarly activity.

Faculty within the small animal surgery section currently include five ACVS board certified surgeons; three surgery residents; two neurosurgeons (DACVIM-Neurology);  two neurology residents; two sports medicine specialists (DACVSMR); three anesthesiologists (DACVA); three anesthesia residents; and eight rotating interns. The orthopedic service is a high level referral center and general orthopedic clinic complemented with the Canine Arthritis, Rehabilitation, and Exercise Science (CARES) Center.  The CARES Center has a state of the art rehabilitation facility with 3 under-water treadmills, an exercise pool, and a small animal hyperbaric oxygen chamber.  The Center also contains a fully equipped gait analysis laboratory with kinetic and kinematic testing capability.   

The Small Animal Clinic is a modern facility equipped to provide state-of-the-art surgical and medical service, teaching, and research. The facilities and equipment of the Small Animal Clinic support 24 specialties and include surgical and therapeutic lasers, negative pressure wound therapy, Force Triad, operating microscope, 40 slice computed tomography unit, MRI, nuclear medicine, radiation oncology, intraoperative fluoroscopy, video endoscopy, stenting, lithotripsy, laparoscopy, arthroscopy, DEXA and PET scanning, total hip system, and a full complement of implants, including plating, pinning, external fixation, circular fixation, and interlocking nails.  Also available to the surgery clinic are a fully developed nutrition service, an integrative medicine service, a regenerative medicine laboratory, critical care specialists, and a veterinary social work program.
