The Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine announces an outstanding opportunity for a full-time clinical- or tenure-track faculty position in Food Animal Medicine and Surgery with ruminant emphasis. Candidates must have a DVM or equivalent degree. Specialty board certification (ACVIM, ACVS and/or ABVP) is preferred, but board-eligible candidates will also be considered. An advanced degree, research experience, and teaching and clinical experience in a University teaching hospital are desirable. Applicants must have a commitment to excellence in clinical service and teaching. The appointee will join the clinical Farm Animal Medicine and Surgery service within the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences. The Farm Animal service is currently comprised of two faculty, one resident, and two interns.

The Farm Animal Service is located within the comprehensive Veterinary Medical Center with handling facilities and equipment for handling large and small ruminants, including an unloading alley, hydraulic squeeze chute, cattle transporters (new 2013), hydraulic tilt table, dedicated downer stall with hydro-floatation tank, and an in-stall hoist and rail system for down cattle. The Hospital for Farm Animals has 2 large surgery rooms available, one with multi-surgery capacity and large and small animal hydraulic surgery tables.  Sonosite portable ultrasound system with image capture capabilities, full service anesthesia and radiology services which are fully capable of anesthesia and imaging of mature large animals (including CT and MRI for smaller patients). In addition, a robust comparative theriogenology service operates a full service general and specialty service supporting the diverse caseload seen by the Hospital for Farm Animals.

Teaching responsibilities will include didactic lectures, techniques laboratories, and clinical teaching of individual farm animal medicine and surgery to students, interns, and residents. The candidate is expected to foster a broad and diverse small and large ruminant caseload through the delivery of efficient and effective service to clients and referring private practitioners and the provision of leading-edge, comprehensive, and compassionate patient care. Faculty members are expected to be involved in professional and community outreach, continuing education, committee service, and curriculum development.

Clinical-track candidates will be assigned up to 75% time in clinics, including patient management, client service, clinical teaching of students and advanced training of interns and residents. Sponsored research is not required for clinical track faculty, but clinical research, publications or other scholarly activities to advance clinical veterinary medicine are expected. Tenure-track candidates will be given at least 50% off-clinic time to meet expectations for developing an extramurally funded research program in an area of strength including collaboration with other scientists, advising of graduate student research, and publication in peer-reviewed journals. Candidates with emerging or established research programs can expect to be supported with highly competitive research startup packages.

Faculty members are encouraged to develop collaborative endeavors with clinicians and scientists within the College and across the University. Excellent collaborative opportunities are available in the Departments of Veterinary Biosciences and Veterinary Preventive Medicine within the college, and the College of Food, Agriculture, and Environmental Sciences. In addition, Ohio State University’s Comprehensive Health Sciences Center, including the renowned James Comprehensive Cancer Center and Davis Heart-Lung Institute, are within walking distance.
