ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF EQUINE PRIMARY CARE

The Department of Clinical Sciences is seeking a tenure track Assistant Professor of Equine Primary Care
Qualifications: DVM or equivalent degree is required. Eligibility for veterinary licensure (or faculty certificate) in the State of North Carolina is also a requirement for the position. Candidates must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere. Strong commitment to excellence in teaching is expected. Also required is the ability to network, develop partnerships and build and maintain relationships with local equine practitioners. This includes the ability to manage and resolve sensitive and/or unexpected issues.
Successful candidates will possess a documented research record. Preference will be given to candidates with board certification, including the ABVP Equine Practice Boards.
Responsibilities:
Teaching: This individual will coordinate and run the equine primary care 4th year rotation. This rotation consists of 1 week of intensive training in a number of basic equine veterinary medical skills, currently conducted at the Equine Heath Center in Southern Pines. The students are then placed into selected, monitored practices for a 3 week training program. While the students are at the practices, the faculty member maintains contact with the students and the veterinarians to assure adequate training. The practices participating in the program are paid for their efforts and participate in 2 training sessions per year.
In addition to coordinating the 4th year rotation, the individual will supervise the equine extramural rotations. These experiences occur in years 1-3 as 1-2 week selectives and in the 4th year as 2 week clinical rotations. This individual may also develop a new elective or selective related to equine primary and preventive care. This faculty member will participate in small group learning courses and Teaching Animal Unit laboratories. In addition to teaching veterinary students, this faculty member will also be expected to participate in teaching primary care to undergraduates and horse owners as part of the new Reedy Creek Farm partnership between the College of Veterinary Medicine and the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. This person will be the point person in the efforts to coordinate the equine training programs of the two colleges.
Research: This position will support research relevant to equine health and wellness with a priority for research in areas of CVM research strengths: infectious diseases/One Health, inflammation, immunity, regenerative medicine, or pharmacology. If desired, this individual might also perform educational research.
Outreach/Service: The individual will be the CVM point person for equine infectious disease outbreak investigation, consulting and disaster planning. The individual will engage extensively with practitioners in the context of the primary care educational block and horse farm infectious disease investigations and consulting. In addition to clinical service as an extension and engagement effort, this individual will be expected to assist with equine group outreach and fund raising efforts with external professional and non-professional groups in the industry, adding to our critical mass of clinicians in this endeavor. Finally, we expect this faculty member to be a participant in international initiatives related to equine health and wellness.
Salary: Commensurate with candidate’s experience and qualifications
