The College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University is seeking qualified candidates for a full-time, term, clinical-track faculty appointment in small animal primary care in the Department
of Veterinary Clinical Sciences. Applications will be accepted at the level of Clinician or Senior Clinician and final rank will be determined by candidate credentials.
The successful candidate will enhance the primary care clinical and educational experiences at Iowa State University and the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center (LVMC). Clinical
effort for this appointment will have 80% effort dedicated to professional practice and clinical instruction in the LVMC.
The remaining 20% effort will be shared between the development of a creative program of scholarship and clinical studies, didactic and laboratory teaching, academic service, and outreach activities. Collaborative clinical research and publications, developing
continuing education opportunities, and development of innovative teaching and/or clinical programs is encouraged.
The person in this position will be expected to provide clinical service in primary care and general surgery, contribute to the clinical instruction of residents, house officers and veterinary students,
as well as, effectively and positively communicate with clients, students, colleagues, referring veterinarians, and technical and support staff. Teaching responsibilities include didactic and small group discussions with veterinary students including laboratory
instruction in the primary care service, as well as, other small animal courses as needed. A successful candidate will collaborate with the other faculty within the primary care service to develop student learning objectives in accordance with the service’s
goals. Clinical teaching also includes instruction, proficiency, and demonstration of blood and urine sample collection, diagnostic sample collection, and physical examination techniques to veterinary students, technicians, house officers, and residents. Clinical
teaching and proficiency in general surgical techniques such as ovariohysterectomy, orchiectomy, and onychectomy is required. The candidate may be expected to provide clinical teaching and instruction in the 3rd year veterinary student surgical skills rotation.
This position may also be expected to provide clinical service and instruction in shelter animal medicine. Activities could include providing leadership and strategic planning for shelter medicine
and grants supporting this program, as well as, coordinating courses in shelter medicine to students, residents, graduate students, and other faculty providing intervention services and expertise to key shelters.
The successful candidate will also provide medical case management including potential case supervision and treatment of hospitalized patients (and commensurate weekend duties). Elective canine and
feline surgery and dentistry for small exotic companion animals is also required. Additionally, the person is expected to remain familiar with the current trends, changes, recommendations, and requirements relating to companion animal and exotic animal care
in association with the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) standards of care and protocols.
The primary care service provides care to small companion animals, exotic companion animals, and wildlife patients. Primary care services offer well-pet, routine preventative medicine, including but
not limited to, vaccination and deworming protocols and diagnostic evaluation of small animal and exotic patients of all life stages; including health certification of patients that are traveling internationally and domestically.
The LVMC is a state-of-the-art facility designed to provide specialized
care and comprehensive medical and surgical services for companion and large animals throughout Iowa and surrounding states. Our clinicians, residents, interns, technicians, staff, and senior veterinary students work collaboratively to provide 24-hour, high-quality
care to animal patients. The successful candidate will complement current expertise in primary care small animal medicine and other specialties including exotic animal medicine and will have a unique clinical focus that will enhance primary care activities
in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

Required Education and Experience:
- DVM or
equivalent degree.
- A minimum of 4 years of experience as a practicing veterinarian in small animal or predominantly small animal medicine.
- A minimum of 4 years of clinical practice experience in small animal general medicine and surgery.
- State of Iowa Veterinary License on or before the first day of employment
In addition, the following position will require:
SENIOR CLINICIAN:
A minimum of 6 years of experience, board certification, didactic and clinical teaching in an academic hospital setting, leadership experience on departmental and/or university committees, and evidence of peer reviewed scholarship.
Preferred Education and Experience:
- An advanced degree.
- Prior teaching or clinical instruction experience.
- Experience working with exotic animal species and wildlife species.
- Experience with CO2 surgical lasers or those who are certified in CO2 surgical laser use.
- Documented record of scholarship through either manuscript preparation and publication and/or success in grant application activity
- Board Certification: American Board of Veterinary Practitioners, American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, American College of Veterinary Pathologists, or
Other Specialty Board
