Director, Diagnostic Center for Population and Animal Health
The Diagnostic Center for Population and Animal Health (DCPAH), College of Veterinary Medicine, Michigan State University, invites applications from outstanding individuals for the position of Director. The DCPAH is a premier, state-of-the-art veterinary diagnostic laboratory, accredited by the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD), occupying a modern 152,000 square foot facility at Michigan State University and providing a comprehensive array of diagnostic services (including anatomic and clinical pathology, endocrinology, nutrition, toxicology, virology, microbiology and immunodiagnostics). The diagnostic laboratory is operated by 130 faculty and staff and processes more than 175,000 case submissions annually. The laboratory offers a comprehensive catalog of tests with more than 750 diagnostic services designed to provide assistance to veterinarians, animal owners, and public officials and organizations in identifying, tracking and addressing animal and public health concerns.
The Director is expected to uphold and facilitate the DCPAH mission and vision, including promotion of the standards of excellence within laboratory sections and adherence to AAVLD quality principles. Applicants should possess excellent leadership, administrative, management and entrepreneurial skills, in keeping with the DCPAH commitment to excellence in diagnostic service, research and teaching. Exceptional communication skills are required as the successful candidate will interact closely with faculty, staff, students, customers, the general public, and the media as well as with colleagues in the College of Veterinary Medicine and University administration. The successful candidate must be committed to working with diverse staff, student and community populations. In addition, the successful candidate will represent the DCPAH in interactions with state agencies such as the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Michigan Department of Natural Resources (which are housed within the DCPAH complex), and Michigan Department of Community Health; animal industry groups and agricultural organizations; and other agencies including the National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL), the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), and the Center for Disease Control (CDC). The Director is expected to be actively engaged with national and state associations such as the AAVLD, the United States Animal Health Association (USAHA), the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), and the Michigan Veterinary Medical Association (MVMA).
The Director reports to the Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine and serves on the Dean’s Cabinet. Candidates must have a DVM (or equivalent veterinary medical degree) with a minimum of two years of experience in diagnostic laboratory medicine and a broad knowledge of laboratory disciplines. A PhD and/or board certification in a laboratory-related specialty are desirable, as is a distinguished record in research, teaching, diagnostic medicine and/or outreach. Applicants must be licensed or eligible for full or limited (academic institution) licensure in the state of Michigan.
Appointment and salary: This position is a full time annual appointment in the tenure, health programs or fixed term appointment system. The position is available at the Associate or Full Professor level and will be assigned to an academic department within the College of Veterinary Medicine that best fits the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. Salary will also be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
