The College of Veterinary Medicine invites applications from qualified veterinarians for the position of Head of the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences (vetmed.tennessee.edu/vmc/SmallAnimalHospital). The department prides itself
on providing state-of-the-art care for pets and zoo animals in collaboration with referring veterinarians and top-notch pre-clinical and clinical instruction in anesthesiology, avian and zoological medicine, behavior, cardiology, community practice, dentistry,
dermatology, diagnostic imaging, emergency and critical care medicine, integrative medicine, internal medicine, medical and radiation oncology, neurology, nutrition, ophthalmology, sports medicine, physical rehabilitation , shelter medicine, soft tissue and
orthopedic surgery, and theriogenology. The department maintains vibrant internship and residency programs in many clinical specialties. The department strives to actively advance scientific knowledge and improve pet health through pioneering and collaborative
bench-top and clinical research ventures.
The Small Animal Clinical Sciences department includes over 50 full time faculty and routinely invests in advanced technologies including a newly renovated, onsite advanced imaging suite with nuclear medicine, CT and MRI; state of the art,
high definition, minimally-invasive procedures suites, including laser lithotripsy and interventional cardiology; DEXA scanning; hyperbaric oxygen; and a cutting edge rehabilitation suite. Emergency and critical care service is provided 24 hours per day 7
days per week. The Small Animal Hospital serves over 19,000 patients each year including small animals and avian / zoo animals. Recent expansion projects included 16,500 square feet of new clinical service areas and 14,500 square feet of new laboratory and
office space.
The department head embodies and advocates for the vision of the department; provides leadership for departmental teaching, research, and service missions; and promotes the public image of the department. The head directs faculty recruitment,
promotes professional development of staff and faculty, and carefully mentors faculty through tenure and promotion. The department head must effectively manage departmental personnel, academic and clinical budgets, and other resources, including equipment.
The department head collaborates closely with the other department heads to advance the programs and missions of the Veterinary Medical Center and the College of Veterinary Medicine.
The successful candidate must hold a DVM or equivalent degree, be board-certified with a national reputation for excellence in a professional and/or research discipline, and have knowledgeable of the range of activities of veterinary academicians
and staff. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, a demonstrated commitment to equal employment opportunity and affirmative action, and a vision complementary to the departmental vision, mission statements, and strategic plans of the College are
required. Preferred qualifications include a record of achievement that warrants appointment to full professor and an advanced degree. Clinical, didactic, and research activities are possible and are based on the desires of the candidate. The head serves for
a five year term that may be renewed. Anticipated starting date is August of 2014.
