the
Department
of Small
Animal Clinical
Sciences

We
seek
an
individual
with strong leadership skills,
an internationally
recognized
record
of scholarship and the
ability to guide
a department
of approximately
40 faculty members
in their
continued
development
of excellence
in teaching,
patient care,
and research.
In addition to
supervising the
faculty,
the Department
Head has
supervisory
responsibility
for
approximately 75 clerical
and research staff
members
and 30
house
officers.
The Department
Head serves
on the
Executive
Committee
of the
College
of Veterinary
Medicine
& Biomedical
Sciences
and the
Veterinary Medical
Teaching Hospital
Board. The
successful
candidate must
have
a DVM (or
equivalent
of
veterinary degree),
must be
able
to
qualify
for
appointment
as a
tenured full
professor, and
must have
a record
of extramurally-funded research
and teaching
excellence,
and must
possess
outstanding communication and interpersonal
skills. Board
certification in
a veterinary specialty
is
highly desirable. Experience
in
academic
or corporate
administration and an advanced degree
are
desirable.
The
successful
candidate
must be
dedicated
to promoting
the
career
development
of others
and to promoting an atmosphere
of cultural
diversity.
The
Department
has
faculty
members who
teach inthe
veterinary professional
curriculum,
the
graduate
programs and
the
undergraduate
Biomedical
Sciences
Program.
The
Department
has
extensive
interaction
with
the
Veterinary
Medical
Teaching
Hospital,
Texas Agrilife
Research,
and
the
Tex.as
Veterinary
Medical
Diagnostic
Laboratory.
Over
the
past 8
years, the
small animal
caseload has
expanded
by an
annual rate
of 4%
while revenues
have
increased at
an annual
rate
of 7%.
Texas A&M
University
is one
of a
select few
academic institutions
in the
nation
to
hold triple
federal designations
as a
land-grant,
sea-grant and
space-grant university,
and
it
has
a College
of Veterinary
Medicine, College
of Medicine
and School
of Rural
Public Health
on one
campus. Texas

Department:

The
Department
of Small
Animal
Clinical Sciences
(VSCS)
has faculty members
who
are
diplomates
in 12
different
veterinary specialties.
The
academic
‘home’ of
the radiologists
is
the Department
of Large
Animal
Clinical Sciences.
VSCS currently has
21
residents, 1 specialty
intern (Internal
Medicine) and 9
rotating interns.
Texas A&M
has
the
only
College of
Veterinary Medicine
in
Texas
and is one
of the
largest
veterinary colleges
in the
nation.

The
Small
Animal portion
of
the Veterinary Medical
Teaching Hospital
has sustained steady
growth in
caseload and revenues.
Over
the past
8 years,
caseload has
expanded by
an average
4%
per
year
while
Small
Animal revenues
have
increased at
an annual
rate of
7%.
·
The
Small
Animal Emergency
Service
provides
24-hour/365 day emergency
care
to the
entire
region.
This
service admits
approximately 6,000
cases
per year
and has greatly
enhanced
the
caseload for
the
rest
of the
Small
Animal Hospital.

The
Diagnostic
Imaging and Cancer
Treatment
Center
is a
state-of-the-art facility with
a Siemens
SOMATOM Definition
40-slice
CT
scanner,
3 Tesla
MR and
one of
2 veterinary TomoTherapy units
in the
United States.
·
The
Gastrointestinal
Laboratory
within the
Department
of Small
Animal Clinical
Sciences
currently
houses
2 faculty members,
15 graduate
students,
and 15 technical
staff.
It receives
approximately
1300
submissions
weekly
from
veterinarians
in both private practice
and academia
and is
actively
involved in
more
than
100
primary
and collaborative
research
projects,
many with
residents
and other
faculty members
in VSCS.
