The Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine seeks a visionary individual for a key leadership role as Director of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) on the campus of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA. The Director’s primary role is to support the clinical education of DVM students. The Director will be instrumental in shaping the future of the VTH in advancing the College’s learning, discovery and engagement goals. The College is searching for a candidate who possesses highly effective managerial, communications, and interpersonal skills, and who desires to be part of a successful team. The Director will lead a successful team of students, faculty, staff, clients, and the public and promote a culturally diverse educational environment in the VTH.
The Director is the Chief Administrator of the VTH and is responsible for development and implementation of VTH policies and procedures. The Director represents the College and Hospital to referring veterinarians and clients of the VTH and is responsible for development of continuing education programs and promoting basic science, clinical, and translational research. Limited direct participation in didactic teaching, clinical service, and research missions of the College is expected.
The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining VTH compliance with college, university, state, federal, and accreditation requirements. The Director will be responsible for the development and implementation of the business plan and budget for the VTH, as well as marketing of clinical services and overseeing the management of hospital facilities and personnel. This position also includes oversight of the Roanoke Satellite Clinic, which operates as a branch of the VTH. The Director is supported in accomplishment of these tasks by an Assistant Director. The Director reports to the Dean, chairs the Hospital Board, serves on the Dean’s Executive and Clinical Boards, and works closely with the Academic Department Heads.
VTH personnel includes approximately 65 clinical faculty from the Departments of Large Animal Clinical Sciences, Small Animal Clinical Sciences, and Biomedical Sciences and Pathobiology, 30 house officers (interns and residents), and over 200 staff, both salaried and wage positions. The hospital provides primary, specialty, and emergency level patient care to clients within a 35-mile radius of Blacksburg and referral service to practitioners in the mid-Atlantic region. The VTH handles 11,500 patient visits annually and another 58,000 (primarily cattle, horses and small ruminants) are seen on farm calls each year.
Required qualifications:
· DVM or equivalent degree.
· Significant clinical experience and a good understanding of veterinary clinical education.
· Scholarly experience sufficient to support appointment as an academic faculty member in one of the departments of the College.
· Experience in organizational finance and personnel management.
· The Director will be required to obtain and maintain in good standing:
o Virginia DVM License to Practice Veterinary Medicine issued by the Board of Veterinary Medicine http://www.dhp.virginia.gov/vet/vet_forms.htm
o Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) DVM Practitioner registration https://www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/webforms/jsp/regapps/common/newAppLogin.jsp
· As Veterinarian in Charge, assure that the Veterinary Teaching Hospital maintains current state and federal accreditation through regulatory compliance
Preferred qualifications:
· Board certification in an AVMA or European-board recognized specialty.
· Advanced degree in a relevant field
