The College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Georgia, invites applications for a clinical (non-tenure track) small animal soft tissue surgeon at the rank of assistant professor. All candidates must have a DVM or equivalent degree, have completed a surgical residency training program registered by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) or a program approved by the European College of Veterinary Surgeons (ECVS), or have obtained board certification by the ACVS or the ECVS.

The successful candidate is expected to actively participate in the training of surgery and non-surgery house officers. For approximately 21 weeks annually, the surgeon filling this position will be responsible for daytime emergency and morning transfers, supporting the interventional radiology service, and serving as the backup for the standard soft tissue service. This service will be supported by a surgery house officer (resident or intern) and students or technicians. For approximately 15 weeks per year, the surgeon will be responsible for participating in the standard appointment-based soft tissue surgery service. Responsibilities during the remaining 16 weeks include opportunities to teach lecture and laboratory courses in soft tissue surgery to veterinary students and the development of scholarly activity consistent with individual interest. Proportionate assignments for teaching, service, and scholarly activity will be based on the interests of the candidate and the missions of the Surgery program and the Department.

The service enjoys access to cutting edge technology in diagnostic imaging, including a 64-slice CT scanner, 3.0 Tesla MRI, digital radiography, ultrasound, nuclear scintigraphy, and a dedicated interventional radiology suite. The Veterinary Teaching Hospital is a 300,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility that opened in March 2015. Each specialty service has its own dedicated rounds room.

The Department of Small Animal Medicine and Surgery consists of 45 faculty members, 37 clinical residents, 10 rotating interns, 4 specialty interns, and 4 administrative staff members. The Department provides shared laboratory space and supports 7 dedicated research technicians who assist in the research missions of the Department’s faculty. Other specialties within the Department include anesthesia, cardiology, clinical nutrition, dermatology, emergency and critical care, internal medicine, neurology, oncology, ophthalmology, orthopedic surgery, and zoological medicine, as well as a community practice program. The Department participates in the college-wide M.S. and Ph.D. programs. Members of the Department actively participate in collaborative efforts with faculty members from other departments within the college and other colleges on campus, including the College of Public Health, College of Engineering, and the Athens campus of the Medical College of Georgia. The Department has a strong track record for teaching, research, and clinical service.
