Associate Dean for Operations and Strategic Initiatives

Position Description

 

The University of Florida (UF) College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) is recruiting for an Associate Dean (AD) for College Operations and Strategic Initiatives. We invite applications for a clinical or tenure-track, full-time faculty position at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. As a vital  leadership position for CVM, the AD reports to and advises the Dean, provides the leadership, management, and vision necessary to ensure the financial strength and operating efficiency of the College, and to ensure the proper operational controls and administrative/financial reporting procedures and systems to effectively advance the College. The AD has responsibility for oversight of an array of college activities, as delegated by the Dean, and is a member of the Dean’s Council.  Those strategic and operational activities for which the AD has primary or shared responsibility include:

 

·      Implementation of Strategic Initiatives – Provides oversight of activities and accomplishments related to CVM strategic priorities, establishing both timelines and accountability.

·      Financial Management – This includes directing the formulation and implementation of the all funds that comprise the College budget, oversight of the financial services office that includes a college-wide shared services center that is comprised of purchasing, central warehouse, financial reporting, and budgeting. Responsible for coordination, preparation, and as needed, negotiation, of legally acceptable contracts with various users of Hospital and College services with the appropriate UF General Counsel offices to include contracts, procurement, and intellectual property. Will work closely with the CVM associate deans, department chairs, and department administrators to ensure the administrative, operational, and financial functions of the CVM are aligned and appropriately integrated with university policies and practices. Additionally, this position serves as Treasurer for the FVMFA Inc., a university component unit.

·      Human Resource Management – Provides administrative oversight to college human resource office.

·      Facilities Management – Provides overall supervision of renovations and construction, building maintenance, security office, contract negotiations and management. Supervises space and facility planning, room assignments, furnishing and equipping, and related issues for CVM spaces; works together with the Associate Dean for Research regarding research-related space, the Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs regarding classroom space and teaching facilities, and the Associate Dean for Clinical Services regarding clinical space and facilities.

·      Information Technology-Provides oversight of the College need for Information Technology and works with campus resources to provide appropriate Educational, Clinical and College IT support.

 

In addition to these responsibilities, the AD will serve coordinator between the Dean, Chairpersons, and Directors for day-to-day activities and special projects, provide assistance to chairs, deans, and faculty in dealing with operational issues within the College and University, and provide administrative directives for daily operations for financial, human resources and facilities management.

 

To assure a thorough understanding of this specific leadership opportunity, applicants should have at least 10 years professional experience (FTE basis) with at least 5 years in an academic setting, preferably within academic veterinary medicine, and substantial leadership experience.  In addition, applicants should have a track record of creating successful programs.


 

 

The successful candidate will have a DVM (or equivalent) and/or PhD, MBA or comparable business experience, and will be encouraged to develop his/her own individual academic program to complement the AD activities.  Options for this academic program will be defined in negotiation with the Dean, and might include teaching, research, and/or clinical service as determined by the candidate’s background and interests. Salary and rank will be based upon the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience.
