Veterinary Specialist, Medical Oncology- OVC Health Sciences Centre

The Ontario Veterinary College Health Sciences Centre (OVC HSC) is seeking applications to fill a 3-year contractually limited position as a companion animal veterinarian in medical oncology.

Applicants must have a DVM or equivalent degree, must be licensed or eligible for licensure to practice in the Province of Ontario, and should be a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) with a Specialty in Oncology. Applications will also be considered from candidates who are eligible to write the certification examination of the ACVIM. 

Candidates must have demonstrated clinical experience and should have a strong background in clinical oncology with outstanding communication skills.  The unit’s goal is to provide excellent patient care while increasing the oncology caseload.  Incidental clinical instruction in oncology to interns, residents, and graduate students may be required.  Service activities will include the management of patients and consultation in the veterinary hospital, with the expectation to build significant primary caseload to support the success of the Animal Cancer Centre. There will be limited administrative duties.  Approximately 46 weeks of service with the potential for shared out-of-hours service responsibility is required.

 

The Animal Cancer Centre (ACC) at the Ontario Veterinary College Health Sciences Centre was created as part of the University of Guelph’s Institute for Comparative Cancer Investigation.  The ACC is a comprehensive veterinary cancer centre currently staffed with 3 American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) boarded Veterinary Medical Oncologists, an American College of Veterinary Surgeon (ACVS) boarded Veterinary Surgical Oncologist, an American College of Veterinary Radiology (ACVR) boarded Veterinary Radiation Oncologist, 3 residents (DVSc), 3 Veterinary Technicians, 2 Radiation therapists, a Clinical Trials Co-ordinator/ Tumour Banker, and a Clinical Counsellor.  The ACC covers 12,000 square feet and includes a Varian Trilogy linear accelerator with on-board imaging (Clinac IX) and Eclipse 3D planning system capable of delivering image-guided intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and stereotatic radiation therapy (SRT).

 

The OVC HSC is equipped with its state of the art diagnostic equipment including, but not limited to, a 1.5 Tesla high field General Electric MRI, CT, digital radiography, PACS system, state of the art ultrasonography, scintigraphy, videoendoscopy, and pulmonary ventilator support, 24/7 fully staffed intensive care, all of which is supported by faculty and staff committed to deliver the very best of patient care.
